It should still work at lower settings, but performance may be impacted. Change the installation path, if the default one does not suits you. Please ignore it and wait for the Home page to come up. It gives you access to the advanced features.

Please ignore it and wait for the Home ring to come up. I've found the BIG problem with the web client that we cannot have with the free version: You can upgrade the VMs to version 10 using the traditional console, but once you do, you can no longer edit the VM with the traditional console, so if you for one or more VMs to v10 with the free version, your machine is pretty much done. In the bottom box where it says Lookup Service URL, replace with your FQDN of your SSO server. Well, it just says I need to download the VSphere Web Client to do so, so I try. At a responsible, a user can get high level statistics about vCenter capacity resources, top alerts, and more. However it appears you can look only and not touch, basic things such as the ability to power a VM are not available to people with the free licence sadly. Note that you print to enable JavaScript and cookies. Refer the instructions document to follow the steps for configuring Fling appliance for Windows vCenter Server.

Download VMware vSphere - You can click anywhere on the wizard page at that moment, to trigger faster completion of the validation. Connect to your host via legacy vSphere C++ client and upload the vib to a local datastore.

It says download the tools to manage the server at x. When I go there, it says here you can download the vSphere Client, but then it says note the traditional client doesn't support new features, and to use the vSphere Web client instead. When I launch this app after installing it, right at the top it says I can keep using it but all new features are on the vSphere web client only. I've googled it and tried searching, where on earth is the web client? Read full post Gabrielle. If however you only have a standalone ESXi host free or licensed and you need access to the advanced features, you could look at purchasing a VMware Workstation license and managing your host from there. It gives you access to the advanced features. This answer is perfect. I am going to have to step up my game I see. Lee, let us know if this answered your question! Darren for VMware wrote: Gabrielle. MEEP MEEP It's just confusing how they do it because when you access the server in the browser after a fresh install, it goes on about using the web client there, and then says download vSphere manager or whatever it is to manage your VMs, but you download it from the link it gives you, and when you run that program, it says the message about this program is old and you should use the web client etc. So just confusing that the system tells you to download it, and then it says it's old, so thought maybe I was missing something obvious. So just confusing that the system tells you to download it, and then it says it's old, so thought maybe I was missing something obvious. And ultimately, you can still manage ESXi free from the traditional client -- many SMBs don't really need any of the advanced features. Yeah, I was hit hard with this issue this morning. I am trying very hard to not be negative about my answer, but what has happened to me today almost would make me forget VMWARE exists as a company completely. I did a P2V yesterday and needed to test it this morning. I shut down the physical server and booted up the virtual server with the VSphere client without any problems. But the machine did not connect. Well, no problem, I suppose it is because it is missing the VMWare tools. I install them, but the machine still does not connect. Ok, I check the network adapters and find that the Converter Standalone has created two new network connections instead of inheriting the configuration from the physical connectors. This is an annoyance, in my opinion the converter should have a way to do this better, but well, no problem, I will modify the configuration of the new adapters to match the old adapters. I do it, but still it does not connect. And then the most stupid things hits me. So I can't modify hard drive size, network connections, network adapter switch assignments, network adapter MACs, etc!!!! Well, it just says I need to download the VSphere Web Client to do so, so I try. And now the nightmare begins. This software, as others in this thread have confirmed, only can be downloaded with the Vcenter ISO DVD. This weighs 3,4 GB!!!!! More than one hour download with my WAN speed. I contacted my virtualization partner and he confirmed that this works this way now. I ask him to check the VCenter DVD to see if the VSphere Web Client exists as a separate installed. Much less time to download, but still more than twenty minutes to transfer it to me via TeamViewer. While we wait he suggests an alterlative. Then he rediscovers the server with the new vmx file and it boots up and connects right away. Finally, a task that with the previous management paradigm would have taken 10 minutes only to me, instead it took me and a VMWARE expert almost two hours. And to top the icing in the cake, when the VSphere web client transfer finishes, I try to install it on my computer and it asks for a VCenter SSO component of course I don't have, and then I can't use it either. I don't know who decides these things in the software companies, but these are the kind of things that would make me look elsewhere for the solution. I have been a VMWARE user and defender for years, but this is too much for me. I am a small shop and I will start looking elsewhere right now. Sorry for the rant. You can select the network vNICs and configurations during the conversion process. Page 63 of the manual: What lee. Do you mean editing virtual machine properties? I don't think that's one of the features that requires the web client. But there are some permissions you need. They're listed on page 151 of the. In that page it is just mentioned that you can change the number of network adapters and select the network that these adapters will use. So it was our fault that we did not select the correct destination network vswitch, but I don't see in that page how to avoid the resulting virtual network adapters losing the physical network adapters IP data or MAC address. Yes, I mean editing virtual machine basic properties. I was connecting to the server using the root account this is a temporary virtualization host, so no need of deep security implementations here, it is just a standalone server , so I don't think there are any permissions missing from the root account, right? Or maybe they have changed this too? I need to check that manual page to confirm this point, really? So, the bottom line is that the way to manage a standalone server for a small SMB has been changed dramatically. Besides, this is not documented, it is an SpiceWorks fellow suggestion and maybe it would not work - Install VCenter, even if you don't need any of its features, and with the cost of the full product the annoyance of having to deal with trial products it implies, plus the infrastructure requisites and work it requires - Edit vmx files directly, which is much harder and much less intuitive than right clicking and choosing edit properties, plus much slower imagine that you just want to change the connection status of the network adapter, and compare the processes between what you have to do with the VSphere client, and what you have to do by editing the vmx files. Not sure why are you so defensive about what lee. To me VMWARE people have reduced the ease of use of their product as an standalone free virtualization tool by a lot. To force us to purchase products we don't need? Ah, to Darren, so you find acceptable that a customer that could have the ESXi solution full for free, using the host and the VSphere client, now has to purchase an additional VMWARE WORKSTATION license that maybe he does not really need, plus being undocumented which adds the risk that some of the VSphere client features could not be present in the VMWARE workstation product? Ah, and I don't think a blog about a VMWARE power user doing some tasks with an ESXi host via VMWARE WORKSTATION is documentation enough, at all. I would expect to be in the ESXi clients list, and confirmation that all features are supported. And if not, what features are not supported. The traditional vSphere Client is intended for use if you need to connect directly to an ESXi host, are performing certain vSphere Update Manager operations, or are running vCenter Plug-ins that support only the vSphere Client such as vCenter Site Recovery Manager or vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager. This is not correct at all. Somebody is not doing a good task with all these things. Well, this sheds a bit of light on the issue, but again is a bad situation: In this forum there are nice suggestions, I suppose they were given before VMWARE released the repaired client: This article shows the real definitive solution. There is a are some? Fantastic way to lose three hours of my time this morning, due to an incorrectly managed product documentation and download pages. Somebody should really step his game, Darren, not only you. Set up two ESXi hosts, and needed to move one VM from one server to another, which I finally figured out I could do with the standalone converter. By default, the converter upgraded the VM to hardware version 10 when it did the conversion from 8. Then, when I tried to connect an external hard drive to the VM, and went to settings, it said version 10 hardware can't be managed with the 5. That led me to the same place as Lee, trying to figure out how to deploy the web client, and finding out that the tools you REALLY need to manage ESXi aren't free, even if you're just kicking the VMware tires at this point. Now that I'm aware that you can select the hardware version in the converter, I'm gonna downgrade the hardware version with another conversion, so I can manage it with the Windows client that comes with ESXi. I'm sure glad none of the VMs I'm fooling around with are in production. Can anyone tell me if Hyper-V is this much of a pain in the neck?.
